National Medical Fellowships is pleased to announce a new initiative: the NMF Emergency Scholarship Fund (ESF), supported by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. This innovative fund provides a quick response to address 3rd and 4th year underrepresented minority medical school students’ need for immediate, emergency funding. The funds can be used to pay tuition or living expenses, depending on need and approval of the ESP Advisory Committee. NMF adheres to the AAMC definition of underrepresented minority students and targets: African American, Latinos, Native Americans, Alaskan and Hawaiian Natives and Asian Americans (restricted to Vietnamese and Cambodian). Emergency scholarships are non-renewable scholarships and can range up to $20,000. Generally, it is expected that scholarships will be $10,000 - $20,000. Qualified applicants must provide two essays, one explaining their financial circumstances and the other their interest in a career in medicine and all documents supporting their financial status. All student applications must be submitted by the medical school accompanied by a letter of support from the Financial Aid Director. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the academic year. Since this scholarship is meant as a quick response to unusual circumstances, NMF seeks to rule on the award within 15 business days of receipt of all required information.
